Ducks Bear Down, Wildcats Lay An Egg

September 22, 2012
106 miles to the stadium
Oregon Ducks vs. Arizona Wildcats
7:30 kickoff
65 degrees with a little wind from the west - It never rains at Autzen Stadium!

It's Saturday, so you know what that means. With Oregon ranked #3 in the country, we are headed South with the flock to watch the team take on the #22 Arizona Wildcats for the opening game of PAC-12 play in Autzen Stadium.

The flock's vehicle ready for migration.

Traveling once again with a couple of newbies, they, like the others this season, are quickly sucked in by the Oregon faithful and Autzen Stadium.

"One of those honey buckets belongs to my party.
Yuuup.
Pretty Awesome!" - Mckenzie

GO DUCKS!

Word is these flags are flying from Oregon to New York! My sister spotted one flying proud on Long Island Sunday afternoon.

Under ominous clouds, we tailgate hard knowing night games always have an added layer of mystery and excitement. The unexpected is everywhere and the stakes are high. The Ducks have little to no room for error if they are to achieve their (and our) goal for the season.

Our fledglings fit right in with the usual suspects. "I was expecting old trucks with the tailgate down, grilling meats right from the truck bed, but instead it's Priuses and BBQs everywhere." -Kenzie

Kim searches for that one perfect Kettle chip for Steve.
Unfortunately, there's never "just one!"

Birds of a feather flock together!

"Here's to Kimi for bringing two new Duck fans to the game!" -Steve

THE CREW

For the first time all season, we make it to our seats for the pre-game festivities. (Like I said, night games are full of the strange and unexpected!)

But I need to back up a little. All week leading up to the game, and all during the drive to Eugene, Kimi and I promised Kim and Kenzie a high-flying, offense-first, action-packed game. We played them the fight song, taught them the cheers, and told them to try, just try, to keep an eye on De'Anthony Thomas as he flies into the end zone time and time again. What we didn't warn them of was a slow game, with some unidentifiable wet stuff (it never rains at Autzen Stadium!) falling from the sky, and an offense that seemed stuck in 1st gear. Where was our promised offensive juggernaut?
The Ducks lead 13-0 at the half, but the fans are not happy.

With Oregon receiving so much attention for its lightning quick offense and high scoring games, we Duck fans start to panic when only 13 points are scored in the first 30 minutes. Luckily, our defense doesn't. As Ryan Finley from the Arizona Daily Star wrote, "on a strange, mild night in timber country, Oregon's defense was a buzz-saw." Yes it was, yes it was, yes it was!
Happy Duck fans as our team scores 15 points in the 3rd quarter and another 21 in the 4th. Fourteen of those points are pick 6's, thanks to our Mighty D! In all, our defense forces five turnovers, returns two for touchdowns, and holds the Wildcats scoreless in six trips to the red zone.

The score may be blurry, but we know what it says. For the first time since 1965, Oregon shuts out Arizona 49-0. And once again, we send the Wildcats tumbling from the rankings. The last time we did that was the last time they were ranked(November 2010). Meanwhile, we climb one spot to #2 in the country with only Bama out in front!

IT'S A GREAT DAY TO BE A DUCK!

Mmm, Cupcakes Taste Good

September 15, 2012
106 miles to the stadium
Oregon Ducks vs. Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles
12:00 kickoff
High-sixties, blue skies, and sunny - It never rains at Autzen Stadium!

The parking lot has been a little quiet the past two weeks, but that's all changed now.
The Oregon Marching Band is Back.

We beat it back from Alaska with just enough time to pack the cooler and pick up the food for an early morning Saturday tailgate at Autzen Stadium. We hit the parking lot with plenty of time for breakfast with friends.

What? Did you really think we were going to have eggs and orange juice?

Ty-quila!

Double-fisting with coffee and Dead Guy.

Tequila and Corona Light? Dios mío!

After another great tailgate talking about everything from football to swimming with sharks to new memories, it's time to get this game started. By the end of the first quarter, however, it's already over.

Kimi gives Stacey "the look."
She knows we've got this thing in the bag.
35-7 Ducks at the half.

HAPPY DUCKS!

With another big win, the cupcake games are finally behind us. PAC-12 play starts next week, and what better way to start conference play than to sit at the #3 spot in the country while Matt Barkley sits on his A$S?

CHEERS TO THAT (and DAT too)!

Mid-eighties, a light NW wind & sunny - It never rains at Autzen Stadium!

Clint talking about the season's potential.
Raw footage from the Willie Nelson concert on Thursday night.

Speaking of magical, Aidan helps decorate the truck in Portland before heading South with the flock for his first Duck Game.

Hard to believe it was his first game - he was such a good web-footed little guy all day!

Aidan sees Autzen and the parking lot for the first time. Remember your first time? Magical.

Phyllis Diller once said, "the reason women don't play football is because eleven of them would never wear the same outfit in public." Ms. Diller, we beg to differ!

Annie asks if she looks like a natural (it's her first game too!) and Aidan perfects his throw ~ "Mom, you gotta step forward when you throw." Future Oregon Quarterback perhaps?

After all that throwing, we're hungry. Luckily, Jacob, Annie, and Anish, master barbequer, are on it.

Sausages, chips, and beer beg a very important question...

in what part of the country do they call them wieners?

Ty shows us it's this part of the country!

Reunited by spirit, bonded by name. U of O.
Kimi, Ty, Treben, and Jacob feeling the feathers
All good things must end, and this was a GREAT tailgate. No better way to spend a day!
"We've got lots of little feet, so it's time to find our seats." -Stacey

"There is a difference between conceit and confidence. Conceit is bragging about yourself. Confidence means you believe you can get the job done."
-Johnny Unitas

LET'S GET THE JOB DONE.

TOUCHDOWN!

     TOUCHDOWN!                           TOUCHDOWN!

KENJON BARNER GETTING THE JOB DONE

A yellow so strong even the lemonade agrees

Once again, the sun eventually sets over Autzen Stadium, and the Fresno State Bulldogs too. Final score: 42-25 Ducks.

WHY WE LOVE FOOTBALL.

A year ago, Kimi and I struck a deal. I got a year's leave of absence from Portland Public Schools; she got the Ducks. Every game, every stadium for the entire 2012 season no matter where they played, we would attend. As an added bonus (after all, I did get an entire year!), I'm documenting it for her with this blog. Every game, every stadium ~ here we come!

TailGate 2012: the season begins.

After a long ride and traffic, we arrive at Autzen. Clint calls the porta-potty!
Some of the first in the parking lot. "It doesn't get better than this." -Clint & Kimi

It's not long 'til others arrive

Greg & his son Brady. Greg says Brady is the Ducks' good luck charm. He was 4 for 4 before the game; now, he's 5 for 5. Could be some truth to that!

                                                                                                                  Electricity is in the air!
Chicken polish sausages & beer. "Best meal of the season" - Jess.

After the "funnest September supper," it's time to head into the stadium, but not before one last picture of the tailgaters. "Football season is kind of like cherry blossoms in April, only better." - Kimi & Jess.

It's gonna be a good season. Oooooooooooooo!

                           HERE COME THE DUCKS!

           Kiss cam, Hug cam!

Hoping to see lots of balls in the end zone!

Touchdown! Lots of them. Early in the second quarter, Jess asks, "What else do you do when it's 29 to 3? The wave is your best move."
WAVE SNOB!

The sun eventually sets over Autzen Stadium, and the Arkansas State Red Wolves too. Final score: 57-34 Ducks.

Football. Friends. Finally.
